heres how: DIY braided back shirt

This picture has been sitting in my inspiration folder for months and for almost as long, I've been hunting for this shirt. When I finally found it, the price was more than I was willing to spend, so instead, I created a look alike using an old t-shirt. I'm very pleased with the results, though I wish I had made the braids a bit thicker. Thin braids and all, heres how:

*Update* I have received many questions regarding the white shirt I used for this project. It's from Target! If you have any other questions about this DIY, make sure to include a email address or link in your comment so I can reply!
 you will need:
-t-shirt
-fabric Sheers
-thread/ needle
-patience
1. Start by lightly drawing a rounded upside down T shape on the shirt and cut along the lines.
 2. Next cut the middle piece into three strips and braid.
3. Next cut each side section into three three strips.
*Tip* I cut out fabric in between the strips but if you want thicker braids, don't leave any space.
4. Now, cut each of those three sections into three more strips and braid. You should end up with three braids on either side, pointing toward the middle.
 5. Sew each of these braids to the center braid and carefully cut off excess fabric.
6. Now it's time to create the top. Cut off the sleeves at the seam and cut the fabric into three sections, just as you did with the back. Braid the fabric and tie off with rubber bands, bobby pins, or safety pins so they won't unravel as you assemble.
7. Last, sew the straps to the middle piece at the neck and cut off excess fabric. Enjoy!
Try it as a cover up! Make sure to check out my other projects here!

You are just reading my mind gf! Why just the other day I saw a girl wearing a shirt like that and I thought to myself "I have got to figure out how to make one of those"...thks for your help!

Great tutorial. I decided to go ahead and try it this morning. I think the shirt I used probably wasn't the best for this because it was cut wider than a standard t-shirt, but it was great practice. I'm definitely going to try again on a more appropriate shirt and I have some big wooden beads I thought of adding also. We'll see. If it comes out nice I'll post some pics. Either way, thanks for the inspiration :)

Love your blog.

nina said...

does anyone know where the shirt she's modeling this after is from? any details will be very helpful! thanks

Nina, I bought the shirt at Target. I also made one with an old american apparel shirt and it looks great too! Thanks for your comment!

Skye said...

ok my email is tennissurfersc@aol.com and i was wondering- can yu use a plain old tshirt for this or is there a preffered tshirt material (by plain tshirt i mean the kinda tshirts tht you always get for free. like the boxy, up to your neck tshirts)

I tried doing this today and figured out that it's best to create spaces between the sets of braids on the sides (like the pictures above). Otherwise, the sides tend to scrunch up too much and make the shirt tighter and uneven. At least that's what happened to mine.

Thanks for posting this though! I've been trying to figure it out myself for a while!

I've been looking for the original shirt for what seems like forever. Where did you find it?! What brand is it?

Anonymous said...

Loved this, I hope you don't mind that I Pinned it. Keep up the good work!

I made one for my daughter-in-law and it looks so lovely on her. I wish I'd used a bit lighter weight fabric so I'm going to make another one.

Anonymous said...

Do you recommend using a t-shirt that is a bit big on you, as opposed to a fitted t-shirt? Just not sure if the braiding makes it tighter or if it looks weird if the front of the shirt is tight.

Definitely going to try this! Lovely!

Aquí said...

@Veronica- I just got this shirt from Target. About $6 I think. Nothing fancy :)

@Anonymous- I do recommend using a shirt thats just a bit too big but not much. It will allow for stretching but it wont get too tight up front.

Anonymous said...

I was inspired to make one of these, and I totally love it!

jmfritz said...

where is the original shirt in the original picture from. like the shirt on the model that took you forever to find?

Aquí said...

@jmfritz- I don't know where the shirt from the photo came from. When I pulled it, the source wasn't linked. The one I tracked down looked exactly like it and I found it on ebay. Unfortunately, the brand wasn't listed.

Anonymous said...

Going to try this with an old tye dye tshirt i have...cant' wait. Thanks for sharing. You rock!!!!

Anonymous said...

I'm definitely doing this! would a v neck work?

Aquí said...

@anonymous- a v-neck would work great! Just make sure to make it slightly loose so that the neck line hangs nicely and the neck line isn't stretched out.

Oh my gosh! I am a total sucker for pieces with sexy back details and now I can create one! Thank you so much for this tutorial. Will definitely try this out! :)

don't use a male style t-shirt, things get MUCH more complicated!!

Anonymous said...

I was wondering if you recomend getting the shirt in your size or going up a size or two since cutting and braiding will change the shape of the shirt somewhat?? carabrush@yahoo.com

I absolutely love this DIY! I took that photo a long time ago,but didn't know how to DIY it!thanks, you're great!!!

How does it look in front? isn't it a bit too revealing to wear in public? without a bra?

Great idea especially for summer ;)

Januel said...

Very cool! I'll have to try this too, although I agree, the braids should be bigger, maybe by using a shirt with thicker fabric, or even adding in extra fabric.

Hey, I know this was posted a while ago, but I was just wondering if you still knew where to find the original shirt you modeled this after.

I tried it myself and epically failed, haha. But I love the shirt!
